Published on October 29, 2019, AFP Sport highlights five key talking points from European football over the weekend.
La Liga's surprise packages, Granada and Real Sociedad, maintained their early charge, with Granada surging to the top of the table and Real Sociedad climbing into third.
Granada's Alvaro Vadillo scored the only goal in their 1-0 win against Betis, securing their third consecutive 1-0 win at home. This marked their first time at the top of the table since the 1973/74 season.
Meanwhile, in Germany's Ruhr derby, Schalke held Borussia Dortmund to a goalless draw. Borussia Dortmund's captain, Alexander Nuebel, claimed the visitors' star-studded attack did not try to find a way past him.
"It was difficult for Dortmund to score a goal, because no one wanted to get into our area," Nuebel said.
Paris Saint-Germain again showed no mercy to old rivals Marseille in France, winning 4-0 at the Parc des Princes. Mauro Icardi and Kylian Mbappe both scored twice for PSG, with all the goals coming in the first half.
PSG are already eight points clear at the top of Ligue 1 after just 11 matches, while Marseille are seventh.
Elsewhere, Juventus, Inter Milan, and Napoli all settled for Serie A stalemates after showing signs of fatigue on the back of Champions League victories. Atalanta, however, were the weekend's big winners, thrashing Udinese 7-1 to move to within three points of leaders Juve.
