On October 27, 2019, a US military operation in Syria resulted in the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State group.

According to General Mark Milley, the dog that participated in the operation performed a 'tremendous service' during the special forces assault.

President Donald Trump announced Baghdadi's death on October 27, 2019, stating that the dog had pursued the IS leader into a dark tunnel where he blew himself up with a suicide vest, killing himself and three children and wounding the dog.

Trump later tweeted a picture of the dog, saying it did a 'GREAT JOB.'

General Milley declined to provide the dog's name or further details about the canine, citing that the name has not been declassified.

However, he did confirm that the dog had been 'slightly wounded' but is now 'fully recovering' and has returned to duty with its handler.
