On October 29, 2019, Laikipia County Governor Ndiritu Muriithi announced the sacking of 20 employees due to breach of ethics and gross misconduct. The move came weeks after the county conducted a staff audit to identify and remove 'ghost workers' from the payroll.

According to Governor Muriithi, some of the sacked workers were under investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). He stated, 'We have concluded the staff audit exercise and about 20 officers have been removed. Some of these officers have been removed due to ethic issues and their names have been forwarded to the DCI for possible prosecution.' The DCI agreed to proceed with the prosecution of these officers, as per the county boss's statement.

The staff audit, which began on Monday, aimed to place members of staff in their rightful job positions. Governor Muriithi noted that the exercise was also meant to address the issue of employees being employed in the wrong positions. For instance, some staff members were employed as clerks but later advanced their education and were working as accountants, which the county wanted to streamline.

During the audit, 35 employees presented their professional documents at the Nanyuki Social Hall. The county boss also highlighted that all 32 tribes living in the county had been incorporated into the county government workforce.
