On October 29, 2019, the county government in Nyahururu conducted a staff audit to identify and remove 'ghost workers' from the payroll.
As a result of the audit, 20 employees were sacked over allegations of breach of ethics and gross misconduct.
According to Governor Ndiritu Muriithi, some of the sacked workers were under investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and their names had been forwarded to the DCI for possible prosecution.
"We have concluded the staff audit exercise and about 20 officers have been removed. Some of these officers have been removed due to ethic issues and their names have been forwarded to the DCI for possible prosecution," said Governor Muriithi.
The county boss also noted that the exercise was aimed at streamlining the workforce and placing members of staff in their rightful job positions.
He explained that some staff members had been employed as clerks but had later advanced their education and were now working as accountants, which was not in line with their job descriptions.
