Organisers of the Standard Chartered Marathon are gearing up for a bigger field in the 2020 charity run, with plans to introduce early registration and a revised deadline.

According to Local Organising Committee (LOC) chairman Peter Gitau, the move aims to increase participation in the event, which drew 18,000 participants in 2019.

Gitau revealed that the 2019 event helped raise Sh34 million for the 'Future Makers' Initiative, a drop from the Sh40 million collected in the previous year.

"We want to have all the elite runners competing under their names like most of the international marathons," said Gitau, adding that the prize fund increase from Sh8.5 million last year to Sh10.5 million this year was well received.

The winners in men and women's full marathon pocketed Sh2 million each, up from Sh1.5 million last year, a trend that also extended to half marathon and 10km races.

Gitau also commended the move to issue medals to all participants and the decision to hold the races at the Nyayo Stadium, which was well received by the public.
