Published on October 28, 2019, a Nairobi court has ordered the closure of four popular nightclubs in the upmarket Kilimani area.
The Environment and Land Court, in a ruling on Monday, directed the Nairobi County Government to revoke all permits and liquor licenses issued to the four entertainment joints: KIZA, B-Club, Space Lounge, and Explorers Tavern.
The court's decision comes after residents of Kilimani successfully sued the four nightclubs over alleged violations of their right to a clean and healthy environment.
The petitioners accused the operators of the clubs of causing noise pollution, littering, and obstructing motor vehicles, thereby depriving residents of sleep and security.
They also alleged that the activities in the four entertainment joints had a negative impact on their children, exposing them to immoral and indecent behavior.
“Some of the other negative effects from the said establishments include noise, littering, obstruction of motor vehicles, exposure to immoral and indecent behavior, property price decline, and loss of income by some residents,” the petitioners noted.
The court agreed with the petitioners that the continued operation of the four clubs in the residential area was a violation of their rights to life and a clean and healthy environment.
The court also declared the operating permits and licenses issued to the four nightclubs by City Hall as unlawful and illegal.
