On October 28, 2019, a heated exchange between Didmus Barasa, the member of parliament for Kimilili constituency, and Junet Mohammed, the member of parliament for Suna East constituency, took a disturbing turn.
Barasa, in a series of tweets, threatened to physically enter Junet's bedroom and eat his wife, Natasha, if he could find her. He also asked Junet to reveal his wife's location, saying he would 'chew her clean'.
Barasa's outburst was sparked by a tweet from Junet, who had posted a supportive image of police officers surrounding Deputy President William Ruto during a visit to Kibra, a constituency in Nairobi. Junet's caption challenged Jubilee, led by the DP, to stop spreading false information about Kibra residents.
Many have criticized Barasa's level of maturity and respect for Junet's wife, with some describing his approach as 'myopic and juvenilistic.' Others have faulted him for resorting to attacking Junet's wife, rather than engaging in a respectful debate.
As the Kibra by-election approaches on November 7, 2019, ODM and Jubilee are doing everything possible to set things right. While ODM believes Kibra is their 'backyard,' Jubilee is hopeful that their candidate, Mariga, will win.
