On October 27, 2019, President Donald Trump and his wife Melania attended a World Series game at Nationals Stadium in Washington, but their presence was met with loud and sustained boos from the crowd.
The booing began when the stadium's video display cut to Trump after showing military members in attendance, and it continued even after the display switched back to the soldiers.
Some fans also took up a chant of "Lock him up!" - a play on the chant frequently heard at pro-Trump rallies against Hillary Clinton, but now often used against the president.
Additionally, demonstrators sitting behind the home plate unfurled "veterans for impeachment" banners during the game, in reference to the House of Representatives investigation into whether Trump abused power by withholding military aid to Ukraine.
Trump has been facing widespread and bipartisan condemnation of his Syria policy, and the impeachment inquiries have put him on the back foot.
It was an unusual excursion for the president and first lady, who sat in a suite behind home plate, in liberal-majority Washington.
Washington manager Dave Martinez had hoped that Trump would "enjoy the game," but the team's focus was on playing baseball, and they hadn't discussed Trump's arrival.
The ceremonial first pitch was thrown out by Spanish-American celebrity chef Jose Andres, a vocal critic of Trump's controversial immigration policies and Puerto Rico hurricane relief efforts.
