On October 28, 2019, the 2019 SIG SAUER International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) World Championships concluded at the CMP Range in Talladega, Alabama, with over 500 shooters from 29 countries participating in the week-long event.
Kenya and South Africa made history by becoming the first African countries to qualify and participate in the IDPA World Championships. The Kenyan team of 12 and the South African team of 6 showcased exceptional skills, withstanding harsh weather conditions to achieve remarkable results.
Reigning Africa Champion Ian Van Der Bank from South Africa secured 2nd position in the SSP Master category and 1st position in the SSP Master International category.
The Kenyan team's outstanding performance was led by Robert Nyamongo, who ranked 3rd in the ESP Master category, and Sammy Onyango, who ranked 3rd in the SSP Master category. Anthony Wahome, the team captain and chairman of the National Gun Owners Association, expressed his joy over the results, attributing their success to teamwork, commitment, and training.
Wahome commended the IDPA Secretariat for squadding the entire Kenyan team to shoot, allowing all 12 shooters to participate in the event. The National Gun Owners Association is now looking forward to hosting the 2020 IDPA Africa Championships in Kenya.
Elizabeth Wachianga of Kenya Prisons Department became the first black lady law enforcement participant at the World Championship, while Geoffrey Pesa from Kenya became the first African to participate in the 2 Gun Discipline at the World Championship in Pistol Carbine Calibre (PCC) and Pistol.
