On October 26, 2019, Dr. Simon Edward Onyango was declared the winner of the Southern Nyanza Diocese Bishop election at Christ the Healer Cathedral Church in Homa Bay town.
As the newly elected bishop, Onyango called on Kenyans to support peace initiatives made by leaders to unite the country.
Speaking at St. John Church in Migori town on Sunday, October 27, 2019, Onyango emphasized the importance of strengthening resolutions made by political leaders to bring Kenyans together.
He noted that fighting common social challenges such as corruption, diseases, and poverty would only succeed if Kenyans reached an accord on settling differences that usually emerge during hotly contested general elections.
Onyango also urged the church to question individuals making huge donations, especially during harambees when contributions surpass known monthly income.
He hinted that there was nothing wrong if Christians across the country supported the Building Bridges Initiative if it was meant to end political animosity generated through the election process.
Onyango was elected at the ACK Cathedral in Homa Bay County, which serves Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, and Nyamira counties.
A total of 23 representatives from the four counties and the national office took part in electing Onyango, who contested against Venerable Phillip Omwaga and Reverend Canon Joshua Abulo.
