Kenyan singer Akothee, alias Esther Akoth, made history on Saturday by being crowned Best Female musician in East Africa at the African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA) 2019 in Dallas, Texas.
She took home the award after beating out several other talented artists, including Tanzania's Vanessa Mdee and Nandy, as well as compatriots Victoria Kimani and Fena Gitu.
Speaking at the awarding ceremony, Akothee thanked her fans and dedicated the award to all single mothers across the world.
"Am gonna accept this award, thank you so much AFRIMMA, thank you so much my fans," she said.
"For all the women in the house, there is power in believing in yourself, I don't care what you want to think about me because definitely I know what I think about myself and that's why I am here today," she advised.
"There is power in uniqueness, there is beauty in being unique," she added.
Other winners at the ceremony included Kenya's Mzazi Willy M. Tuva, who was named Africa's best radio and TV presenter, and Omy Dimpoz of Tanzania, who won the East African Artiste of the year award.
