A Day in the Life of Dr. James Kirimi ¶
Dr. James Kirimi, a maxillofacial surgeon and CEO of Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital, starts his day at 6 am with a word of prayer and a 30-minute reading session. He then checks his emails and replies to urgent ones.
As the CEO of a Level 5 public hospital in Meru County, Dr. Kirimi's days are filled with administrative duties, meetings with his team and health county departments, and attending to external partners. He also spends time reviewing maxillofacial patients in the ward and preparing them for surgery.
Dr. Kirimi's passion for his work is evident in his love for the immediate impact of his surgeries on patients. He finds satisfaction in knowing that the hospital provides health solutions to hundreds of people every day. However, he faces challenges such as cancer patients presenting late, managing public perceptions, and patients' inability to afford care.
Dr. Kirimi urges Kenyans to enroll in NHIF and awaits the rollout of Universal Health Care by the national government. In his free time, he enjoys reading books, particularly science books and African writers, and spending time with his family on weekends.
