On October 27, 2019, Chile's President Sebastián Pinera announced the end of the state of emergency, just two days after over a million people took to the streets demanding economic and political change.

The decision came after the week-long nighttime curfews ended on Saturday, October 26, 2019, following the worst civil unrest in decades.

As protests turned deadly, authorities imposed both the state of emergency and curfews last weekend.

"We are in a new reality," Pinera said on Saturday. "Chile is different from what it was a week ago."

"We are in a new reality," Pinera said on Saturday. "Chile is different from what it was a week ago." Pinera also announced that he would "ask all ministers to resign in order to form a new government," a day before the state of emergency was lifted. At least 19 people died in the worst political violence since Chile returned to democracy after the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship from 1973-90.
