On Sunday, three Kenyan fishermen who were arrested at Yama Island in Uganda last Friday were released after their families paid a total of Ksh.35,000 to Ugandan authorities.
The fishermen, who were on their daily fishing expedition in Lake Victoria, were detained by Ugandan security officers who were patrolling the waters.
According to Kibro Beach Management Unit chairperson Joel Maulidi, the fishermen were exposed to harassment and torture from Ugandan and Tanzanian officers, resulting in significant financial losses due to fines imposed by police from neighboring countries.
Mr. Maulidi noted that the Migori fishing community continues to appeal to the Kenyan government to protect them from external aggression by officers from neighboring countries.
