On October 27, 2019, Safaricom's Interim CEO, Michael Joseph, spoke out against the tribal profiling of the company's new CEO, Peter Ndegwa, in an interview with K24.

Joseph dismissed the claims that Ndegwa's appointment was based on his tribal background, stating that the time was ripe for a local CEO to lead the multinational company.

He also addressed the rumors that Ndegwa would be politically swayed and run down the company, saying that these were unfounded and baseless.

Ndegwa, who will be joining Safaricom from Diageo PLC, has been described as a competent leader with the skills to run a multinational company.

Despite the initial backlash from some Kenyans, who expressed their displeasure on Twitter, Joseph remained confident in Ndegwa's ability to lead the company.
