Published on October 27, 2019, the EACC has summoned several county officials, including two county executives and 35 members of the County Assembly, over allegations of corruption and misappropriation of funds.
The officials are being probed over Sh100 million suspected road rehabilitation procurement irregularities and a Sh7 million trip to Arusha, Tanzania, by ward reps.
County Assembly Speaker David Kerich, his deputy Zelemoi Ameja, acting director of finance Nehemia Kandie, finance and economic planning county executive David Sergon, and chief officer for finance Jane Barus were among those who recorded statements with the EACC.
According to the EACC, procurement processes were not followed in the construction of roads under the rapid results initiative dubbed 'Imarisha Barabara.'
The Sh100 million had been allocated for road projects across 30 wards in the 2018/19 financial year budget.
Residents have lauded the EACC's move, calling for the executive and the county assembly to be held accountable for the alleged corruption and misappropriation of funds.
Isaiah Biwott, the chairperson of Baringo civil society groups, said, 'We want the EACC to investigate further. What is under investigation is just but a drop in the ocean. There are a lot more happening behind the scenes.'
According to the Controller of Budget report for 2018/19 financial year, Baringo County spent most of its budget on salaries and travel and less on development.
