On October 27, 2019, the Kenyan government airlifted relief food to residents of Wajir County who had been severely affected by floods caused by the ongoing rains.
Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa led the efforts to distribute the food, confirming that 29 Kenyans had lost their lives as a result of flash floods, with 7 of them being from Wajir County.
Wamalwa assured Kenyans that the government had put in place necessary measures to prevent such losses in the future.
Heavy rainfall had caused flash floods in various parts of the country, with Wajir County being one of the hardest hit areas.
Due to the devastating effects of the floods, the government was forced to airlift food to the affected areas after 150 trucks carrying relief food got stuck on Kutulo road for 20 days due to the washing away of the main bridge.
Wajir County Governor Amb Mohamed Abdi Mohamed and Wajir North MP Ahmed Abdisalan urged the government to take measures to mitigate the effects of heavy rainfall.
