On October 27, 2019, Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i met with Kenya's first all-female Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, a historic milestone in sub-Saharan Africa. The team of 48 commando officers, drawn from the Administration Police Service, had just completed a rigorous five-month training program.

During the meeting, Dr Matiang'i expressed his admiration for the team's dedication to serving their country. He noted that the team's formation comes at a critical time when the country is seeking to address emerging security threats and hostage crises with precision and speed.

Dr Matiang'i assured the team of the government's support, promising to prioritize their welfare, provide advanced training, and capacity building. He met the team over lunch, where he made these commitments.

“I had the pleasure of having lunch with Sub-Saharan Africa’s first all Female SWAT team. This formidable group of commandos are dedicated to serving our great country and I promised to prioritize their welfare issues,” said Matiang’i.
