On October 27, 2019, Juliana Rotich, co-founder of Ushahidi, was awarded the German Africa Prize for her outstanding contributions to tech innovation and community problem-solving.
The German Africa Prize, an initiative by the German Africa Foundation, recognizes individuals who have made significant efforts towards democracy, human rights, and other social concerns.
Juliana Rotich was selected from a pool of 18 nominees by a jury of 16 panellists. The award acknowledges her business achievements, technological innovations, and sense of social responsibility.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel recognized Juliana's efforts, stating, "Your success also encourages many other women. We need people like you who dare to innovate and thereby infect others."
As the executive director of BRCK, Juliana Rotich also advocates for internet access, further emphasizing her commitment to community development.
Previous winners of the German Africa Prize include former Botswana President Ketumile Masira and Somalia's anti-FGM campaigner Waris Dirie.
