On Mashujaa Day, a live bullet was discovered in Senti Kumi, Likoni, Mombasa, directly opposite the Mama Ngina Waterfront Park where President Uhuru Kenyatta led the festivities.
The 500-meter Likoni channel separates Senti Kumi, along Shelly Beach, and the refurbished Mama Ngina Waterfront Park.
A sniper bullet can travel up to 3,218 meters, depending on the weapon used, its calibre, and wind speed, among other factors, according to experts.
The seized bullet was taken for analysis, and security forces in the region are now searching for the rifle it may have come from.
Security sources in Likoni alleged that the bullet was linked to three terror suspects who were killed in Majengo Mapya three weeks before Mashujaa Day.
Police reports indicate that the suspects were planning to carry out an attack during the ceremony.
A cache of deadly weapons was confiscated after the suspects were killed, including a G3 rifle, a hand grenade, and hundreds of ammunition of different types.
Eight people were arrested after the raid, with two of them, Athuman Nyae and Bakari Chimbonja, saying they had planned to carry out the attack on Mashujaa Day.
They have since been charged at Mombasa Law Courts, with an affidavit filed in court attributing the planned attack to intelligence reports.
