On October 26, 2019, the Kenyan government refuted reports that the burial site of freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi had been discovered at Kamiti Maximum Prison.

The Interior Ministry issued a statement, calling the information 'false and misleading.'

According to the Ministry, 'Our attention has been drawn to the news on some platforms that the grave of our freedom fighter Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi has been found at Kamiti Prison. Please note these claims are false and misleading.'

Earlier, Dedan Kimathi Foundation CEO Evelyn Wanjugu Kimathi, who is also Kimathi's daughter, had announced that the gravesite had been identified.

Kimathi was the leader of the Mau Mau movement, which fought against British colonial rule in Kenya.

He was captured in 1956 and later hanged in 1957 for being in possession of a firearm.
