On October 26, 2019, a suspect in the murder of Catholic priest Michael Kyengo made a shocking confession to a magistrate in Kirinyaga.
The suspect, Kavivya Mwangangi, was arrested on Thursday at his Mwea home in Kirinyaga County and described to Senior Principal Magistrate Hellen Onkwani how he and others killed the priest.
According to Mwangangi, he was given Sh1,500 by his friend Michael Mutunga to assist in making an offering, which ultimately led to the priest's murder.
He told the court that Mutunga arrived at his home at night, gave him the money, and asked him to board a car without knowing their destination.
They drove to a river, where Mutunga left Mwangangi in the car and strolled to the river bank. He returned and opened the boot of the vehicle, revealing a naked man who was later identified as the priest.
Mwangangi was asked to tie the priest's hands and legs, and he recalled Mutunga asking the priest to give him the secret number of his M-Pesa and bank accounts.
The suspect narrated how Mutunga transferred sums of money and then directed him to tie the priest's hands and legs as he lay on the ground face down. Mutunga then took a panga and carried out the murder.
However, the magistrate directed the officer to present the suspect before a chief inspector of police to record the confession as required by law.
The case will be mentioned on November 6.
