On October 26, 2019, a family in Thika found themselves in a bitter dispute with a Nigerian national who had been living with their deceased daughter.
Maureen Muthoni, 31, had passed away in September 2019 at Nairobi Hospital due to complications from pneumonia.
Her family's efforts to bury her remains were thwarted by the alleged husband, Charles Enedo, who claimed that Maureen was his wife.
Mr. Enedo, a Swedish citizen, had been living with Maureen and their two children, and had even run a tour and travel company with her.
However, Maureen's mother, Lydiah Nyamuathi, disputed Mr. Enedo's claims, stating that he had never visited them and that they were unaware of his relationship with their daughter.
Ms. Nyamuathi also revealed that the hospital and mortuary bill had shot up to Sh2 million, which was a significant burden for the family to bear.
According to Ms. Nyamuathi, Maureen had changed after meeting Mr. Enedo, and the family had not seen her alive since December 2018, when she was admitted to Karen Hospital.
