Makerere 2022: Celebrating a Legacy of Excellence ¶
As we approach the centenary of Makerere University in 2022, it is a time to reflect on the institution's rich history and its impact on East African education. Founded in 1922, Makerere has been a beacon of excellence in the region, producing some of the most influential leaders and thinkers of our time.
For many, the mention of Makerere evokes memories of the institution's early days, when it was a technical institute that produced some of the region's most skilled engineers and designers. The university's centenary celebrations will be a time to look back on this legacy and to celebrate the many achievements of its alumni.
One of the most fascinating stories about Makerere's early days is the origin of its name. According to Dr. Michael Nsimbi, a Makererean and founder of Ugandan linguistic and folkloristic studies, the institution was originally known as 'Nnyanjeeradde', meaning 'the lake is calm'. However, the unofficial name 'Makeerere', meaning 'waters of the unholy early rising', stuck and eventually became the institution's official name.
As we celebrate Makerere's centenary, we should also remember the institution's connection to some of the most influential leaders and thinkers of our time. Elders like Ngugi wa Thiong'o, Micere Githae Mugo, Elimo Njau, and Bethwell Ogot have spoken about their unbreakable links with the institution. Our dearly departed like David Rubadiri, Grace Ogot, Ali Mazrui, and John Mbiti also left their testimonies, and we should honour them with more than mere mention in the celebration of Makerere's hundred years.
As we look to the future, we should be inspired by the legacy of excellence that Makerere has built over the years. As the institution celebrates its centenary, we should also reflect on the many ways in which it has shaped the region's education and culture.
