On October 23, 2019, a form one student from Cardinal Otunga Girls High School in Bungoma South Sub County tragically lost her life in a suspected suicide.
According to Deputy County Police Commander Johnstone Lyambila, the student, identified as 16-year-old Sarah Nekoye Sifuna, was found dead in her dormitory with a piece of a bed sheet wrapped around her neck.
Lyambila confirmed that the student had left behind a suicide note stating that she did not cheat in geography and would rather die than be shamed before her fellow students.
The Deputy Police Commander expressed concerns over the rising cases of suicide in the county, attributing them to underlying issues and unresolved differences.
Speaking to the press, Lyambila cautioned residents against taking their own lives, emphasizing the sanctity of human life.
The deceased's father, Zakayo Sifuna, appealed for justice for the death of his daughter, expressing his suspicion when the school administration avoided him after receiving a text message about the incident.
Mr. Sifuna revealed that he was eventually escorted to the mortuary, where he found his daughter lying with the piece of sheet on her neck at Bungoma County Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
