Phylis Ngirita's Tears in Court: NYS Scandal Suspect Pleads for Leniency ¶
Phylis Njeri Ngirita, a suspect in the National Youth Service (NYS) scandal, broke down in court and pleaded with the judge to be lenient on her bail. Ngirita, who was charged with failing to remit tax from money she received from NYS, denied all four counts of tax evasion.
Ngirita claimed she had no cash to pay the hefty bail charges, citing other responsibilities such as school fees. She was accused of trading as Njewanga Enterprises in NYS tenders and supplies in 2016 and 2017, and failing to pay taxes amounting to Ksh20.7 million.
The court released Ngirita on a bond of Ksh1 million with one surety and alternative cash bail of a similar amount.
