On October 26, 2019, Governor James Ongwae's administration began enforcing an Executive Order to cut down eucalyptus trees planted near rivers in Kisii County.
As a result, farmers are now counting their losses after officials started bringing down the trees, which were planted in riparian areas.
According to the governor, the drastic measure is necessary to ensure residents have access to water in the future.
“If we do not take drastic measures now, residents will not have water in the next 50 years,” Governor Ongwae said.
