Published on October 26, 2019, the Meru dual carriageway project is set to transform the town's transportation landscape. The 13-kilometre road will run between Gikumene and Gitoro Showground, with the other arm connecting Makutano junction to Ruiri junction.

According to Runji Consulting Group, the design and tendering consultants, three alternative designs will be prepared by the end of February 2020. The project aims to reduce social and environmental disruptions by exploring options such as narrowing the road and removing parking bays and walkways.

Kenya National Highways Authority (Kenha) regional manager Albert Semutwa warned that those encroaching on the highway reserve should leave on their own volition, with no negotiations or compensation. The construction could commence by the end of next year, according to the timeline issued by Dr. Patriso Njiru, the consultancy head.

Preparatory drafts show that 144 plots owned by 140 institutions and individuals are due for compulsory acquisition to accommodate interchanges at Gitimbine, Makutano, Kaaga, Ruiri, and Gitoro.
