On 25 October 2019, the Dedan Kimathi Foundation confirmed that the gravesite of Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi Waciuri, one of Kenya's most famous Mau Mau fighters, had been located at Kamiti Prison.

According to Evelyne Wanjugu Kimathi, CEO of the Dedan Kimathi Foundation, the discovery is a significant milestone for the Dedan Kimathi family and the larger freedom struggle heroes fraternity.

Wanjugu stated, 'This development is not only just great news for the Dedan Kimathi family but also the larger freedom struggle heroes fraternity.'

The foundation is now waiting for orders from Chief Justice David Maraga to allow for the excavation and exhumation of Kimathi's remains for a decent burial.

Dedan Kimathi was captured on 21 October 1956 after being shot in the leg by an askari called Ndirangu. He was later charged with possession of a firearm and sentenced to death by a court presided over by Chief Justice O'Connor and an all-black jury of Kenyans.

Kimathi was executed by hanging at the Kamiti Maximum Security Prison on 18 February 1957. His burial site remained unknown for 62 years.
