Renowned political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has criticized Mt Kenya lawmakers for their stance on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), saying they are discussing nothing as the BBI report has not been released.

Speaking on October 25, 2019, Ngunyi said, "As there is no BBI report, what are they discussing? The Mt Kenya lawmakers are just discussing nonsense among themselves."

The lawmakers from Mt Kenya had earlier stated that they would reject the BBI report if it proposed that the president be elected by parliament.

They also stated that the region cannot accept a system of leadership where the president is elected by parliament, instead of the people.

However, the lawmakers' stance was criticized by Moses Kuria, a legislator from Gatundu South, who said that the group was discussing something they did not understand.

The Mt Kenya lawmakers want the president to be elected by the people, not by parliament.

They argue that the region has a large population but few representatives in parliament, which leads to poor representation.

They also fear that if the president is elected by parliament, a legislator elected by a few thousand voters would have the same number of votes as one elected by hundreds of thousands of voters.
