Published on October 25, 2019, a Ugandan gay rights organization, Sexual Minorities Uganda, reported that 16 men were detained by police on suspicion of homosexuality and human trafficking.
The men were arrested on Monday in a neighborhood outside Kampala, the capital city, while being hosted by another rights group.
According to Diane Bakuraira, a representative of Sexual Minorities Uganda, the arrests took place after a complaint was made to the police.
Uganda's penal code punishes gay sex with up to life in prison, and the country's ethics minister has been pushing for a bill that would punish gay sex with death, despite the government's denial of such plans.
