On October 25, 2019, the African Union recognized outstanding teachers across the continent.
Erick Ademba, a teacher at Asumbi Girls Secondary School in Homa Bay County, Kenya, was among three educators awarded the inaugural Continental Teacher Prize.
Alongside Ghanaian Augusta Lartey-Young and Ugandan Gladys K., Ademba received a certificate and $10,000 in prize money at a ceremony held at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The prize honored teachers who excel in quality teaching, encourage desirable behaviors, engage in activities that enhance the value of learning, and help students achieve their long-term career goals.
This achievement comes after Peter Tabichi, a Kenyan teacher, won the 2019 Global Teacher Prize in March, becoming the first African teacher to receive the prestigious award.
