On a quiet corner of Lavington, Nairobi, stands the Kioko Mwitiki Art Gallery, a hub for young artists to showcase their talents and learn from experienced instructors.

Founded by Kioko Mwitiki, one of Kenya's first scrap-metal sculptors, the gallery has become a go-to destination for up-and-coming artists like Matt Kayem, whose one-man exhibition opened in early December 2019.

Aspiring artists of all ages are drawn to the gallery's spacious double-decker venue, where they can take classes with art teachers like Teresa Wanjiku, a graduate of Kenyatta University's fine arts department.

‘I’ve taught students as young as three and as old as 39,’ says Teresa, highlighting the gallery's commitment to nurturing artistic talent across all age groups.

While some artists have successfully sold their works online, others prefer to showcase their art in the gallery, where they can connect with potential buyers and gain exposure to the local art scene.

‘We are up for that as well,’ says Kioko, welcoming young artists who want to rent space in the gallery for pop-up exhibitions.

One such artist is Matt Kayem, whose prints feature self-portraits that blend African textiles with autobiographical installations. His paintings, meanwhile, reflect his fascination with African history and African-American culture.

‘His presence in his artwork gives it an intimacy which I like,’ says Za’idi Onsango, the gallery's curator, referring to Kayem's use of self-portraits in his art.

As the gallery continues to support young artists, it remains a vital part of Nairobi's art scene, providing a platform for creatives to showcase their talents and connect with like-minded individuals.
