Published on October 25, 2019, Ghana's Minister for Finance and Economic Planning, Ken Ofori-Atta, informed U.S. officials that the country would no longer work with Power Distribution Services (PDS).

The move comes after Ghana terminated a contract with PDS, a private electricity company. The decision has led to the cancellation of a multi-billion dollar Power Africa deal with the United States.

Started in 2013 by then U.S. President Barack Obama, the Power Africa deal aimed to provide electricity to millions of households in Africa. However, the $190 million deal seems to have collapsed.

The U.S. embassy responded to the statement, saying the decision by the Ghanaian government to terminate the contract was unjustified. 'The United States underscores the importance of contract sanctity as essential to a conducive investment climate and a pre-condition for inclusive economic growth,' the embassy said.
