On October 25, 2019, Peter Ndegwa was appointed as the new CEO of Safaricom, a move that was met with both praise and criticism.

The appointment was seen as a significant milestone for the company, with many Kenyans welcoming the decision to appoint a local CEO.

‘‘I know, just as has been the case, integrity and humility will continue to be your trademark in this new role,’’ Ndegwa's wife said in a heartfelt message, pledging her family's prayers and support.

However, not everyone was pleased with the appointment. Deported political activist Miguna Miguna termed Ndegwa and others ‘‘mafia rigging machine’’, arguing that they are all from one ethnic group.

Interim CEO Michael Joseph dismissed claims that the company had bowed to government pressure to appoint a Kenyan CEO, stating that Ndegwa's appointment was based on merit and ‘‘natural progression’’.

‘‘He has deep experience with multinationals. He was the best choice for the job,’’ Joseph said.

With high expectations and criticism surrounding his appointment, Ndegwa faces a challenging task in leading Safaricom to new heights.
