Published on October 25, 2019, a shocking twist has emerged in the murder investigation of Father Michael Kyengo, a Catholic priest who was found dead in a shallow grave in Embu, Kenya.
Police sources reveal that detectives have been following a lead that Father Kyengo was killed as a sacrifice in an occult ritual, a claim that has been corroborated by a third suspect who was arrested on Wednesday.
The suspect, Michael Muthini Mutunga, was arrested in Makindu driving Father Kyengo's car, which had been repainted. Mutunga has been in police custody for a week and has confessed to being a member of a cult known as Illuminati Official Clun based in Sandton City, Johannesburg, South Africa.
According to Mutunga's application to join the group, which was retrieved by detectives, he had tried to join the Illuminati group six times and had described himself as a pagan from Mbeere South.
Police are in possession of a book listing the names of 86 people and their contacts who are either presumed to be members of the group or potential recruits. Detectives say they will seek to interview them.
Yesterday, Mutunga was arraigned in a Nairobi court, which allowed the police to detain him for 10 days to enable them to complete their investigations.
Investigations reveal that Father Kyengo was abducted and murdered on October 8 inside Mutunga's house in Gategi, where a knife suspected to be the murder weapon was retrieved from a pit latrine in the compound.
