Peace, Security, and Trade Top Agenda at Russia-Africa Summit

On Thursday, October 24, 2019, the inaugural Russia-Africa Summit took place in the Russian resort city of Sochi, with peace, security, and trade being the primary focus of the plenary session.

Co-chaired by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the summit brought together world leaders who emphasized the need for concerted efforts to combat terrorism and transnational crimes, which they said hinder economic growth and stability, particularly in emerging economies.

President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, who was in attendance, stated that the summit marked a turning point in Russia-Africa relations, creating a new platform for crafting mechanisms of cooperation between the two regions.

President Kenyatta emphasized that the pursuit of peace and sustainable security is a core aspect of Kenya's foreign policy, which aligns with the African Union's agenda. He also highlighted the importance of transnational security challenges, such as piracy, terrorism, cyber security, and trafficking, which can only be addressed through cooperation and partnerships among nations.

President Kenyatta called on Russia to use its influential position in the international community to promote global action towards sustainable development and climate action. He also urged Russia to lobby the United Nations to provide funding for the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

President Putin pledged to continue supporting African nations in addressing their challenges and commended President Kenyatta for his leadership role in promoting economic prosperity in Africa, particularly in involving the private sector in the country's economic development.
