Published on October 25, 2019, a question was raised about the possibility of loving a job but disliking the workplace. The questioner had been working at the same company for three years, starting as an intern and later being given a permanent role.

However, the major problem was the toxic work environment, riddled with tribalism, nepotism, and favoritism. The management was overly controlling, and the bosses spoke rudely to employees in public.

According to experts, a toxic work environment is often a result of poor leadership. It is not enough to have good values and expected behaviors listed in the policy document; leaders need to practice what they preach.

They must use courteous language and treat all employees with respect, regardless of their tribe, grade, or gender. A board that pushes for relatives to be employed will only encourage tribalism, nepotism, and cronyism in the organization.

If the CEO gives in and participates in this unprofessional practice, it is only a matter of time before favors are demanded and exchanged in all departments. Within no time, a group of incompetent but entitled employees will start pulling their weight and making it obvious that they are untouchable.

Fortunately, there are options available for employees who find themselves in such situations. They can raise their concerns with their seniors, suggest an employee engagement survey that guarantees anonymity, or even consider whistleblowing.

If all else fails, it is essential to remember that there are reputable organizations out there, led by people who genuinely care about the welfare of their employees. Taking courage and exploring other opportunities can be a liberating experience.
