On October 24, 2019, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) announced the arrest of 46-year-old Kavivya Mwangangi in connection with the murder of Fr. Michael Maingi.
According to the DCI, Mwangangi was arrested in an intelligence-led operation at Kategi area in Mbeere, Embu County, and was found to be in possession of a mobile phone and a SIM card used to receive cash from the deceased priest's phone through M-pesa.
The suspect was arrested as part of an ongoing investigation into the gruesome murder of Fr. Maingi, who was kidnapped from Thatha Parish in Machakos on October 8, 2019, and found dead in a shallow grave in Embu County on October 15, 2019.
Police believe that Mwangangi and his accomplice, Michael Mutunga, who is in police custody, may be connected to a cult, with an application form to join the Illuminati cult, reportedly filled by Mwangangi in September 2018, recovered from his rented house.
Other items recovered from the house included blood-stained clothes and a notebook bearing names and phone numbers of people suspected to be members of the secret society.
