On October 21, 2019, a violent confrontation between a form three student and two police officers in Nairobi's Central Police station made headlines. The incident has now led to a court case.
Samuel Wainaina Ngugi, 20, a student at Nester Secondary School in Nakuru, is accused of beating up and injuring Police Constable Khalif Mbokomo. The altercation occurred when Mbokomo and his colleague, Dancun Kimainga, stopped Ngugi along Tom Mboya Street and asked him to identify himself because he looked suspicious.
Ngugi allegedly turned violent, telling the officers 'mtaninjua' before assaulting Mbokomo. He is also accused of offensive conduct after allegedly calling the two officers prostitutes.
Ngugi denied the charges before senior resident magistrate Bernard Ochoi of Milimani Law Courts. He was released on a bond of Sh 50,000 with a surety of similar amount and an alternative cash bail of Sh 20, 000 with a contact person to ensure he attends court.
