On October 25, 2019, police arrested Hannah Khahugani, a University of Nairobi lecturer, after discovering her living with the decomposing body of her son in their South B apartment.
Khahugani, a new tenant at Kifaru Front Apartments, had been staying with her dead son for at least two weeks, according to neighbours.
Neighbours claim that Khahugani had been doing chores for her son, including washing and hanging his clothes, but stopped after two weeks.
A neighbour, Mary, revealed that she had been washing her son's clothes daily, but stopped after a few days, which raised suspicions.
Police were alerted to the situation after the flat caretaker reported a foul smell emanating from Khahugani's house.
According to police, Khahugani had been living with her dead son before they were alerted to the situation.
Teachers from the University of Nairobi had tried to contact Khahugani to discuss her son's upcoming exams, but she never responded to their calls.
A neighbour stated, 'Teachers tried to call Khahugani because they were worried about the boy who was to prepare for exams but she never took calls from the school.'
