Police in Kisumu have taken into custody a father and his wife over allegations of torturing their 14-year-old son.
The incident occurred after the boy was accused of stealing a mobile phone, leading his stepmother to wrap his hands in a newspaper, tie them, and set them ablaze using paraffin.
According to Nyando Police Boss Leonard Matete, the parents attempted to coach the boy on what to say to the police, suggesting a possible cover-up.
The boy, a Class 8 pupil, is set to sit for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams next week and has been living with his father Ojoro Omuya and stepmother Rose Akoth since his mother's passing when he was just one month old.
He has been taken to hospital for treatment and is expected to be moved to a children's rescue centre for observation before the exams.
