Heavy rainfall and flash floods are expected to hit Nairobi and several counties in the coming days, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department's weekly weather forecast.
Published on October 25, 2019, the forecast warns that some parts of the country will experience up to 20mm of rains, leading to potential flash floods, and residents are advised to be on the lookout for sudden appearances of flood waters, even in areas where it has not rained heavily.
The affected areas include Nairobi, Central, Coast, Western, South and North Eastern regions, with the Met Department warning that the intensities of the rainfall are expected to be higher especially over Central, Northeast and Coastal regions.
Residents are advised to avoid driving through or walking in moving water, and not to shelter under trees or near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.
According to government Spokesman Cyrus Oguna, at least 29 people have lost their lives countrywide due to floods caused by the heavy rains in the past three weeks, with 11,700 persons displaced and 10,000 livestock swept away during the same period.
The counties most affected are Lamu, Kwale and Garissa, with rescue operations enhanced to help those displaced to be taken to safe areas.
