On October 25, 2019, a court in Rongo handed down a three-year prison sentence to a woman found guilty of child neglect after abandoning her three-month-old twins.

The twins were left near Kadera Kwoyo Adventist Church in March, and the woman, Maureen Achieng, was arrested in August after a lengthy investigation.

Magistrate Raymond Langat presided over the case, hearing testimony from more than three witnesses who testified against Achieng.

According to the court, Achieng's actions caused unnecessary suffering to the children, and she was found guilty under Section 127 (1)(a) of the Children's Act No 8 of 2001.

As per the ruling, Achieng was given 14 days to appeal the judgment, after which she will serve the three-year sentence.
