Kenya's Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rain in central, northeastern, and coastal regions between Thursday and Sunday.

According to the Met, many parts of the country will receive above 20mm of rain in 24 hours, with the public advised to watch out for floods and landslides.

The warning comes after a week of heavy rains that have caused death, property losses, and devastation.

Meteorological Department director Stella Aura warned of possible landslides in the central and western regions, advising people in landslide-prone areas to be on high alert.

“People in landslide-prone areas, especially over the slopes of the Aberdare Ranges, Mt Kenya and other hilly areas over the Western region should be on high alert,” she said.

Counties expected to experience heavy rain include Mombasa, Kwale, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kilifi, Homa Bay, Kisii, parts of Tana River, Lamu, Muranga, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, Busia, Kitui, and Taita Taveta, among others.

The rains have so far claimed the lives of 12 people, with thousands of livestock dying in parts of Turkana, Wajir, and Marsabit, and thousands of people displaced from their homes due to the flooding.

Ms Aura also warned of possible flooding in areas that have not experienced heavy rains, cautioning against driving through water-logged areas and walking in moving water.

She advised people to be on the lookout for possible lightning strikes, and not to shelter under trees or near grilled windows.
