On October 24, 2019, Rongo Resident Magistrate Raymond Langat handed down a three-year jail term to a woman found guilty of abandoning her three-month-old twins.
The court found substantial evidence linking the woman, Maurine Achieng, to child neglect after more than three witnesses testified against her following her arrest in August.
According to the court, Maurine Achieng had caused unnecessary suffering to the children, who were abandoned near Kadera Kwoyo Adventist Church in March.
Magistrate Langat cited Section 127 (1)(a) of the Children’s Act No 8 of 2001, which states that any person who wilfully assaults, ill-treats, abandons, or exposes a child in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or injury to health commits an offense.
The convict has 14 days to appeal the judgment, failure to which she will serve her jail term of three years.
