Multichoice's Economic Impact on Kenya

Published on October 24, 2019, a report by Accenture revealed that Multichoice, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, has had a significant impact on the Kenyan economy over the past three years.

The company's economic contribution was evaluated through its procurement of goods and services, as well as its direct contribution to Kenyan GDP through profits, wages, and taxes paid in Kenya.

Direct Investment in Entertainment

As part of its core business, Multichoice has contributed Sh 22.6 billion to the country's economy, including its impact on employees, training, taxes, and regulatory fees.

The company directly employs 181 people and conducts 69 training sessions every year, with a significant portion of its contribution coming from the video content produced during this period.

Between April 2015 and March 2019, Multichoice produced 12,423 hours of connected video content and paid Sh 1.8 billion in direct taxes, Sh 7.1 billion in indirect taxes, and Sh 124 million in regulatory fees.

Local Content

Locally produced content has also played a significant role in Multichoice's contribution to the country's GDP, with the local content industry contributing Sh 14.2 billion over the period.

Maisha Magic East, a channel that invests in local content, has reportedly impacted over 200,000 lives through job creation and household reach, generating Sh 8.4 billion in GDP uplift from employment opportunities.

Empowered Supply Chain

The value chain to distributors, installers, and ancillary suppliers for Multichoice's operations amounts to Sh 21 billion, with Sh 3.5 billion invested in distributors and installers and Sh 2.4 billion in adjacent contributions from ancillary suppliers.

A total of Sh 11.7 billion GDP uplift from employment engagement and Sh 1.2 billion in subsidies has been borne on behalf of customers.
