On October 24, 2019, FIFA announced that China would host the Club World Cup in its new expanded format in 2021, following a council meeting in Shanghai.
The tournament will feature 24 teams from 2021, a significant change from the current format featuring seven teams.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his enthusiasm for the new format, stating that it would play a huge role in further developing the club game in Asia.
Infantino said, "It is a historic decision for football because the FIFA council decided today unanimously to appoint China as the hosts of the new FIFA World Cup for clubs."
The new tournament will be a competition that every football fan is looking forward to, featuring the best clubs competing in a true World Cup format.
Qatar will host the penultimate edition of the tournament in its current format, with the final two editions in the old style serving as test events for the 2022 World Cup.
