On October 24, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko led a four-hour operation to repossess illegally grabbed land plots in South C and Parklands, accompanied by high court advocate and city lawyer Karen Nyamu.

The operation aimed to reclaim land sections that were grabbed through backdoor means by private developers, which were set aside for use by the county government and as reservoirs for the Nairobi sewerage company.

According to Karen Nyamu, director of Nairobi water and sewerage company, the company has experienced cases of land grabbing before and private developers are encroaching on public land and looting county assets.

“Nairobi water and sewerage company has experienced cases of land grabbing before. Private developers are also encroaching public land and looting county assets making this a rising pandemic, especially in Nairobi county. Through evidence, law and action, we shall work with the help of the governor to shun away this cartels’ kingdom.”

One notable case involved the Nairobi sewerage firm, which found itself at loggerheads with RENTON company over the expansion of Ruai plant after details emerged that the latter had illegally encroached on the land.
