On October 24, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta made headlines by nominating Reverend Samuel Kobia, 72, to chair the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).
The nomination comes as another instance of the president appointing a senior citizen to a state job, following the appointment of former Othaya MP Mary Wambui, 69, to chair the National Employment Board.
The NCIC, formed in 2008, aims to promote peace, cohesion, and sustainable development in the country.
The nomination process was delayed due to a pending legal case, with the High Court ruling in favour of activist Okiya Omtatah's petition to stop Parliament from hiring NCIC commissioners.
The new team, which includes former Rangwe MP Philip Okundi, former Vihiga Woman Representative Dorcas Kedogo, and others, will replace the previous team led by Francis Ole Kaparo, whose term ended in August last year.
The list of nominees is subject to approval by the National Assembly.
